RAP texts written by English 9 2011 students based on short stories
Former JIS student Young-Jin Chang (class of 2005) who finished studying economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009 and is now 2nd Lieutenant in the Republic of Korea Air Force, was kind enough to record the rap songs written by English 9 students. Young-Jin was my student in 10th grade and loved rapping even then. He continued his rapping hobby throughout college.
The fun they had
by Claire Mulder, based on Isaac Asimov’s story “The Fun They Had”
One day Tommy found a book
And Margie wanted to take a quick look
They turned the pages, yellow and crinkly
And they noticed that it was a bit stinky
The yellow pages described an old school
That Margie thought was strange but pretty cool
She hated school, with all the tests
And the robot teacher was a really big pest
Then they compared a robot with a man
My dad’s smarter than a robot, Tommy began
“Margie! Time for school!” Margie’s mother exclaimed
Margie headed for the door with a lot of pain
When the robot asked her to turn in her homework
She slipped it in the slot and started doing her school work
But the book stayed in her mind and it made her pretty sad
Thinking about all the fun they had.
Listen to the rap, performed by Y.J.
Future is change,
by Carlee Peterson, based on Isaac Asimov’s story “The Fun They Had”
Why read paper books?
They go to waste
You throw them away
A television holds millions of books
Why go to school?
Have school come to you
No man, just a robot
No other kids, just you
Fits your every need
Kids must have liked school back then
And now it’s torture
I don’t like school
Listen to the rap, performed by Y.J.
For the fun they had I pine
by Shreyas Patil, based on Isaac Asimov’s story “The Fun They Had”
I read a book the other day
It had a story to convey
Just one story, not fifty nine
Unlike the books of today’s kind
Back when kids learnt from a school
Not at home from a mechanical tool
Back when kids learned the same thing
Not things matched to how they think
Back when teachers taught with poise
Not with a mechanical voice
I always thought that this was best
But now I’m starting to detest
Things should have improved over time
But now, for the fun they had I pine
Listen to the rap, performed by Y.J.
Turn the pages, go outrageous
by Jee Ooung Hong, based on Isaac Asimov’s story “The Fun They Had”
it was centuries ago
and time was moving slow
no robot teachers in our homes
teaching with no tone
we didnʼt stay in one building everyday
we went to school right away
and had friends everyday
every kid went to school together
in any kind of weather
we walked to school
following the rule
we learned the same things
until the school bell rings
men were our teachers
not mechanical creatures
they gave home work to read
no matter how much we plead
and the screen didnʼt move
we had nothing to prove
we turn the pages
and go outrageous
Listen to the rap, performed by Y.J.
Rap by Wookie
by Seung Wook Chung, based on Susie Kretschmer’s story “And summer is gone” Every parts in my body froze When you said that three words the words drowning me, in serious dose
It was a true nightmare, trying to trash all my doubts. you made my world crumble into dull nothingness
Mind being dumb like the blue screen on my PC All those times being together playing and talking Those moments being shattered in 3,2,1 boom!!! Bringing all the flashbacks, rewinding and playing
Remember all the times we spent in that swamp? When we sat down drawing mayans and stuff. All the fun we had, surely not in the dump, but just our secret playground, courtesy of us.
But as you change your looks, your mind shifts as well It applies to you, amy, you began avoiding me I acted I didn’t care, But in fact I was in hell. Then we started to go separate paths
At first I thought I was being immature and you were the one who had grown up first But as our lives move away from our overture I knew something was completely wrong.
Every parts in my body froze When you said the words “I Know Right?” the words killing me, one by one
